statement

I wish to stand before what lies prior to the sign.
Yet I understand that even if something can be felt bodily, the moment perception rises to consciousness, it is already encoded in signs.

That is why I take a paradoxical position: to present the impossibility of escaping the sign—through the sign itself.

The subjects I choose to photograph are those with the least possible symbolic intensity.

Strong signs draw the viewer into familiar meanings, while weak signs hold the viewer in a state of “just seeing.”

— Overlapping white lines, boundaries, fragmentary forms —

These are not immediately subsumed into nouns or meanings. They keep the viewer in the act of perception itself, allowing it to surface.
Through this weakened signification, I continue to pursue a direction toward what lies before the sign—
just as painting once revealed its materiality and presented its medium as it was.

Accepting the inescapability of the sign, and still continuing to record a desire for what lies beyond it—
that is my work.

私は「記号以前」に立ち会いたいと願っています。
しかし、身体的な感覚として触れることはできても、知覚が意識にのぼった瞬間にすでに記号化されていることを理解しています。
だからこそ、私は逆説的に「記号を通じて、その不可能性を提示する」立場をとります。

私が被写体として選ぶのは、できる限り「記号としての強度の小さいもの」です。
強い記号は観る人を既知の意味へと引き込みますが、弱い記号は観る人を「ただ見る」状態にとどめます。

──重なった白線、境界、断片のようなもの──

これらは名詞や意味に即座には回収されず、観る人を「ただ見る」状態にとどめ、知覚そのものを浮かび上がらせます。
私は「弱められた記号性」を通じて、記号以前への志向を探り続けています。

絵画が物質性を顕在化し、素材をそのまま提示したように。

記号を免れ得ないという条件を受け入れつつ、なおその外部への志向を記録し続けること──それが私の仕事です。
